Steven Cohen

Biographie

Steven Cohen, performer et plasticien, est né à Johannesburg Afrique du Sud, il vit en France. Il performe des interventions dans l’espace public, dans des musées, des galeries et des salles de spectacle.

Son travail dirige systématiquement l’attention sur ce qui est marginalisé par la société, à commencer par sa propre identité d’homosexuel/juif/blanc/sud-africain. Une de ses performances les plus connues est Chandelier (2002) dans laquelle, perché sur des talons vertigineux et vêtu d’un tutu chandelier illuminé, il interagit avec des résidents d’un township de Johannesburg sur le point d’être détruit ; cette pièce existe sous forme de performance live et de documentation vidéo de l’intervention sur le terrain.

En 2009 Steven Cohen a été artiste en résidence au Baryshnikov Arts Center et au Center for Performance Research à New York. De 2003 à 2008 il a été artiste associé du Ballet Atlantique/Régine Chopinot, à la Rochelle.

Il conçoit un workshop intitulé «  Corps Scénographie » qu’il dirige entres autres à la Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin à Strasbourg, et à l’Atelier de Sèvres à Paris.  En septembre 2013 son intervention Coq/Cock « non invitée » sur l’Esplanade du Trocadéro a entraîné son arrestation pour exhibitionnisme sexuel ; le Tribunal correctionnel de Paris l’a déclaré coupable de cette accusation, mais n’a pas énoncé de peine contre l’artiste.  La vidéo de Coq/Cock, a été présentée dans l’exposition Chercher le garçon au MAC VAL en  2015 et a été acquise en 2016 par la Mairie de Paris pour son fonds d’œuvres contemporaines ; il vient aussi de participer à Disguise: Masks and Global African Art au  Seattle Art Museum.
